More Gym Offenders
This morning we have two new entries into the "People at the Gym Who Annoy Me" hall of fame:
1. The girl on the treadmill who walks slowly and drinks coffee. Hey there, how's your workout coming along? Feeling the burn? Got your blood flowing? How in the name of Christ can it feel good to workout and drink hot coffee. Why even go to the gym? Can we please get some help for this poor woman who's so addicted to caffeine that she actually has to drink coffee while working out? Please?
2. Have you ever found fifty dollars just lying on the street? I did once. I picked it up and just stared at it for about 15 seconds, trying to convince myself that it was actually happening. I know it doesn't seem like much now, but when I was a kid 50 dollars was a large, large amount of money. Anyway, that's kind of how I felt this morning when I noticed a girl walking backwards on a treadmill. I couldn't look away; I had to stare at her continuously just so I could keep confirming in my head what seemed impossible: a girl was walking backwards on a treadmill in front of everyone at the gym. And it was crowded today. Here's to you, backwards treadmill lady. You're warped sense of what constitutes effective excercise is a shining example of just how wayward our diet crazed society has become.

Hey, i had to walk backwards on a treadmill and those elyptical (?) machines after knee surgery. Has to do with working different muscles and stretching your ligaments in different ways.
Anyways, she might not have been in rehab and if not, then she's an idiot, but if she is, leave her alone man.....
I've seen the backwards walking people before. They assume me, too, even if they have perfectly good reasons for doing so.
First of all it just isn't polite to stare. Just because someone is doing something a different way in the gym doesn't mean it is wrong or is silly.
Walking backwards on a treadmill demands more energy than forward walking and increases your heart rate. It also works different muscles and prevents boredom. In addition it reduces the impact to the joints and increases the demand on the quadriceps.
Someone may choose to walk backwards due to an injury or to mix their routine up or to improve their fitness level.
Walking backwards is great and I think everyone should try it. It isn't as easy as it looks.
I agree that drinking coffee while working out is crazy.
More offenders are people who feel a need to talk on their cell phone while working out. I have also seen people sing out loud while working out (just annoying).
Last but not least, unless you have poor coordination, have an injury or are elderly, I wish people would let go of the side rails or front bar of treadmills. Let it go, please! By holding on it decreases the effectiveness of your workout.
Just my thoughts.
