A Celebrity Came to the Show I was at. Am I Screwed?
Went to see the ol' Metric at Spaceland on Friday, minus all of the band members except Emily Haines. She was just about to come out and do her solo set on the piano when I noticed Christina Ricci, Adam Goldberg and some friends milling about the place. No big deal, except now I'm forced to consider whether or not I can still like this happening band now that celebrities are infiltrating my local indie scene. Of course I just noticed today that Metric is the download of the week on iTunes so I guess they're now more well-known than the outfit I used to see at the Silverlake Lounge. And besides I'm sure there's celebrities into every band I've ever seen so that's not really the issue here. It's that they were physically at the same show as me. Now, I'm not someone who despises celebrities or indulges in the schadenfreude of their foibles, in fact I admit to being a fan of those two in particular, but for some reason I find it a distraction. It's not their fault, it's just that one minute you're hanging out at Spaceland feeling good about your hip as hell underground existence, then all of a sudden you recognize someone and just like that you're now feeling like some tawdry starfucker hanging around the shadows of Skybar hoping to get a peak at a castmember from the Real World. Time for a new favorite band.

I'm sure Adam Goldberg goes to Spaceland all the time. In fact, I saw his band play at Spaceland 5 years ago back in 1999 after I met him at a Jon Spencer Blues Explosion show earlier in the week and he invited me to see his band. He's a music fan. Give him a break.
Hipsters are great, but haters...me no like.
Maybe it should be "And Justin Only for the Non-famous." Aren't you seeking a bit of your own fame by even doing a blog? If you wanted to stay underground you should just get pencil and paper, my hipsta.
Besides, being a hipster implies being judgemental simply because things can only be yours when no one else likes them yet.
Spaceland? A "hip as hell underground?" hmmm. maybe in '96. When you were still in plastic pants.
Being at Spaceland makes feel good about your "hip as hell underground existence"? What is so underground about Spaceland? So what if Adam Goldberg and Christina Ricci were there? I usually hate the typical LA folks who love to drop the names of the celebs that frequent their local hang-out spot somehow implying that they are so way cool to be hanging out in the same place, but this is just as bad, maybe worse. Stop trying so hard to be a "hipster". In my opinion, hanging around wannabe hipsters is way worse than hanging with a couple of celebs that happen to have decent music tastes. Do us all a favor and stay home.
Yea, get a friggin' grip. I've seen those two at Spaceland tons of times. So, maybe you are the damn poser, eh? That club hasn't been cool in ages.
Damn, look at all these folks giving you hell for speaking your mind. And they call you the poser and such. Funny that.
PS: Look! I'm *not* posting anonymously. :P
In a way I feel you. I've gone through this experience before, when you realize that something you love is going (gasp) "overground". The first time for me was in high school when I heard a jock singing "Sweet Child of Mine", until then GnR belonged to me and my Sunset Strip crawling cronies. Same thing happened with Jane's Addiction and Nirvana. It will always happen. And by the way, a true hipster never admits to being hip, because that's just not hip. You dig?
Hey Justin, no one likes you. Just look at all these rude comments. "You're not a hipster, you're a poser!" Whatever, losers. Justin is smarter than all of you. He's almost as smart as me.
Its easy to call you a snob, but its more fun to defend you. First off, class conflict. Rock / rap and its variants are pressure valves for a lot of us who feel that our lives are unsatisfying in profound ways. We are looking for pathos, drama, something. Celebrities are not entitled to sympathy by virtue of having their dreams come true and material needs satisfied, achieving immortality through fame. To the point - they got everything they want because their parents gave them good genes and now they want people to think they are edgy and cool and true artists? Well fuck off. Someone has to tell them no to something. So from here on out, with bands, all music fans should agree to beat senseless any and all actors who go to shows, or else boycott the music so that the musicians eventually get proactive about spotting these clowns in the crowd.
